I've been meaning to share this tidbit for a while now and finally remembered to make the post.

While perusing the shelves at my local NAPA store a few weeks ago I discovered an entire shelf full of gallon jugs of GL-1 gear oil. I've known that they've carried this for a long time as a special order item but now it's a regular stocking item again. Apparently, some European manufacturers (Audi, BMW, Saab) have gone back to specifying this oil for their newer manual gearboxes. Great for us!

In case you don't know what this is, it's the correct, factory-specified gearbox oil for most of our Lancias, as well as most FIATs from the '70s and '80s. In recent times it's been difficult to find at normal outlets and many of our FIAT/Lancia parts dealers have been offering it at fairly high premiums. It's also known as "tractor oil" and can be found in 5-gallon buckets at tractor and farm supply stores, but this isn't necessarily a perfect solution for most of us.

The NAPA part number is 65-201 and it's called SAE 90 Mineral Gear Oil. (There's that "mineral" thing again, Will. :)) The best part is that it sells for $8.89 per gallon.
