View Full Version : I think my Beta Spyder is beyond hope.

I got all the electrics working, and I got it to run OK, so I was going to get the garage to pick it up and see how much welding etc it needed to get through an MOT.
So I washed it, and discovered that the roof was leaking. When I took the seal off, I discovered these holes in the front edge of the roll bar/roof strip (or whatever you want to call it): http://www.flickr.com/photos/90461577@N00/
Is it dead? Is it worth spending any time/money on getting this car on the road, or is it merely a spares car?

Cheers
Duncan

It doesn't look hopeless at all! If that is really all the rust on your car it is very minor for a Beta. the rust on your car looks like it is quite easy to fix!

However, before you draw your final conclusion check all the obvious rust areas, like the cases (?) running below the doors, the strut housings, etc. The multiple layers of sheet metal used in many locations can make a car look reasonably well from the outside, while they can be terribly bad underneath it.

That's not the only rust. It definitely needs sills (both sides), and maybe a bit of work on the floor. I don't know what the subframe is like. That's a fair chunk of work, so it'd cost a few quid, but that's not so much of a problem if the rest of the car is OK, and those bits will be relatively easy to get hold of.
The reason why that hole worries me is because of what it means about the state of that huge panel that runs all around the roof of the car. It's not worth spending good money on getting the sills etc sorted, if that panel is rotten and is going to bubble through and need replacing in the next year or 2. It's not like it would be easy to find a replacement panel after all.
