Well I got the 81 Coupe insured today on an RV type policy for a set value of $3K since I will never again use it as a dail driver anyway, the policy has no layup terms, I am covered driving it 365 and because of the RV type policy thru Westfield insurance, (I have our home and other two autos insured thru them as well), it actually costs less than liability only, like it was a daily use car!

I then went to the BMV, (anyone in Ohio understands wanting to avoid that place! ha ha), to purchase tags for it, after some tossing it around, I went ahead and purchased "Historical" tags for it instead of putting my ZAGMAN tags on it, for two reasons, one, it isn't a Zagato and two, I do not plan on driving it much more than to events and races at Mid Ohio anyway with the ocassional zip aond out here in the country were there is no law unless someone calls them, even then it takes them hours sometimes to show up! unless it's a violence type call ha ha. In Ohio, (and more importantly, my County due to tax rates), they only cost $24 and do not expire until 6-9-2057! I am pretty sure this will be the last time I pay to register the ol girl! depending on modern medicine of course! LOL

Now all I need is that dang split manifold exhaust gasket, a few hours on my back screaming and grunting like a two dollar whore, and I can actually start driving and dialing on it! <grin>

Lucky! Ive had a complete mare of a time trying to sort out insurance for my HPE VX. Cant get agreed value as I will be using it every day, so exceeding mileage limits. I will have to insure it on a normal policy and fight it out if something bad happens.

What bugs me the most is that agreeing the value of a classic car surely has no relation at all to whether or not I intend to use it or have it as a 'garage queen'.

meh.

Chris,
I don't know which company you've been dealing with, but different 'classic car' insurers have different policies regarding mileage and daily use; there must be at least a handful of companies who specialize in classic car coverage--even AAA offers it now. I can't use mine for business or commuting (no big deal--I work at home), but the mileage is unlimited. Others who quoted me coverage had daily use allowance, but mileage limitations. AAA has an new agreed-value 'classic car' product with very few limitations (although I ended up with another company with a longer history of classic car coverage). Make sure you shop around thoroughly.

I use Liberty Mutual, no problems taking coverage off in the Fall and re-instating in the spring either

You could do worse than try AON who provide cover for the LMC - For my HPE VX I get unlimited mileage incl. business use, agreed value, declared mods and £100 excess all for £125. Miles covered this year 2.

My insurance has no layup times or mileage limits on my declared value and because I declared such a low value, (only $3K with $500 deduct, so I actually only get $2500), it doesn't need an appraisel or picture record and such. It qualifies on our policy as a recreational use vehical because we still have one other car for each driver in the house hold listed as that persons primary use, my wife on the Jeep and me on the van.

It is my independent agent who always sets me up with these type policies. I haven't been able to go out on my own and buy insurance less than I get it thru him, bundled in a package thru one company.

I used to have Grange Mutual but when we moved into the country far far away from any fire departments, their prices on the home owners side went thru the roof so my agent switched me to Westfield, who I have now, and so far, am perfectly happy with, but I haven't had to make any claims yet either! LOL

Grange was by far, and I really mean "by far", the best insurance company I ever delt with in my life when we had to make an "at fault claim" to replace the nose on our 99 Dodge Dakota puckup back in 2000, my wife took out a pole in a snow and ice storm after being forced off the road by a gas station robber running from the cops driving the wrong way on a one way street, not only was he a robber, but of course, you guessed it, no license to drive or insurance!

Strange! Ive just spoken to them and they say they wont do everyday cover on these cars.

They quoted me £450 for a non-agreed value policy. Its still the best quote ive had so far considering that it includes the fairly low excess and european breakdown cover, but I dont understand how you can have unlimited mileage and agreed value. What sort of policy did you ask for?

Edit - hmm. maybe its because I dont have it listed as a second car. Maybe I should have a shed that serves no purpose other than to be my 'primary' car for insurance purposes. (Looks over to his current 160k mile vw golf)

Chris, it is through the LMC. Are you a member? It is a classic car policy whether 'modern classic' or 'cherished' I cannot remember. It's not my everyday main car so this might have a bearing on the policy they offer me and of course premium. The daily driver I did have insured with them but no longer. I've had the VX insued with AON since whenever they took over the club scheme which was before time began (1997). Initially I had 5k miles a year but about 2001 I noticed the mileage restriction was replaced with unlimited which they said was a concession to classic car owners. TBH it doesn't make a difference to me. The cost of fuel running a Beta everyday is the determining factor which makes it an occasional use car.
I much prefer a car that gives 50-55mpg as opposed to 27 from the Beta.

So give AON call again. You might have to join the LMC if you haven't already so I guess this £38 can be added to the premium making it in the region of £160-165. Not bad.

Good luck.

Useful info

Thanks, already a LMC member so it has to be the extra car thing. I suppose I could technically have access to another car.. itd give me an excuse to buy another one to play with :) I guess theyd expect me to actually use it as my main car though.

I hate insurers, its such a farce, for all the 'we treat you as an individual' and suchlike adverts, its just complete BS.

No a few years back I had just the Beta, no other cars and still ahd this policy. Mind you and I guess yours will now be of much higher value in it's restored state. Are you really planning to use it everyday even during winter? May be it would be better to buy a cheap run around to collect the grime instead? By it's nature insurance has to be tailored to account for different risks whether driving history of policy holder, age, location, use of vehicle, mods, place of storage, medical history, etc.......

So when do you pick it up from Chris Bastow or is he delivering it?

I'll be flying up there (sounds posh - but actually just the most practical and cheapest way!) to collect it once they are happy with it. Its going through the test drive phase at the moment, 3 test drives so far, 2 ending in breakdowns (fuel pump, loose connection at coil).

Definately going to use it every day - a lot of work has gone into making sure the bodywork will stand up to the test of time. and I think its the best all round car for everything I do at the moment.
