Well today I went for a nice drive... Stepped on the gas at a light and SNAP, idle..idle.. idle...
I broke the accelerator cable :( Luckily, I had ordered a cable on ebay and I was close to the shop that did my body repair work. So I cranked up the idle and chugged over to the shop.... I guess ill be out of order for a few days...

Hi Ed,
Sorry to hear of the problem, and it's not a straightforward repaid iirc - great idea on turning up the idle - probably wouldn't have thought about that! Hope you didn't have to sit in traffic at higher revs
Cheers

Hello Ed,
Not a job I have done, but it may be possible to simply replace the inner by pushing it through the outer.

I had that happen to me too- had to drive home with a stick holding the throttle open, nearly redline at idle gives just enough power to shift up to . like, third gear on the highway! :)
Take a good look at the throttle cable with a magnifier to see if it's a clean break, i.e. bright metal fracture. If it's black, or rounded at the end, you need to check your motor grounds- bad motor ground can try to ground the motoer through the throttle cable, although I would imagine if this were the case it would have happened when you went to start the car- worth a check though before you swap cable.
Yes, you can thread the inner through the existing jacket no problem, but if you have the 2pc cable, then no, you'd replace it with an X-1/9 cable. Unless you just happened to have an "official" Monte S2 cable.

When it happened, I rolled off to the side of the road and opened the engine bay. My first thought was that the little stopper screw on the cable came loose or some linkage. Then I realized it wasn't anything in the engine bay. Next I took the pedal off and sure enough, the cable broke right above the pedal..

I recently replaced my cable and the job is a bit of a pain to do.
The cable is just pushed through the tube from the console end. It's a pain because the end of the tube doesn't come all the way forward to the opening in the top of the tunnel.
There is also a rubber cap over the end of the tube and the cable has to go through a small hole in the center of the cap. My job was doubly difficult because, after pulling the old cable out, I found that there were still several strands of old cable stuck in the hole in the rubber cap. The strands were apparently from a previous cable replacement because the old cable was still solid it's entire length until you got to the very end.
Getting these old strands out was the toughest part because they were twisted and wouldn't just slip out. They also had old grease on them and were slippery as hell and I couldn't grip them by reaching back into the tunnel.
As much as I hate to do such things, I ended up cutting a small slot in the top of the tunnel with my Dremel tool, back to the end of the tube.
Once i got the old strands out, it was a piece of cake to insert the new cable with the access provided by the slot.

Methinks you are mixing throttle cables and speedometer cables, Will!

Well unfortunately or maybe fortunately I am letting someone else do this job... I am out of town this week and wanted to drive it next weekend... Hope they do a good job....
