My [until recently] trusted repair shop has managed to
lose mine along w/the new bearings . Bearings I can re-
place but those carriers ? Again this is for a '76 Series #1
Scorpion: Ackerman-less geometry . HELP PLEASE !

the front hub carriers from an X1/9 will fit - if you get the pair. The 1300's have the same size bearing as the Scorpion and the 1500 has the larger (more desirable) bearing.
The major differences are that the tierod arm is in slightly (very slight) different locations than the Scorpion and produces slightly different ackermann effect. This offset is different on various years of the X's production (why you should get the pair). If you find an X being parted out, just get the entire hub carrier/bearing/hub so you don't have to install the bearing.
I opted for the 1500's, which produces the most ackermann, along with the larger bearing. Because the arm reaches 'more into' the car, the stock tierod ends may bottom out before correct toe is achieved. I used shorter tierod ends from a series 2, but the threaded end of the rack may be shortened as well (we are talking about 1/4").
In case you didn't know it, the stock Scorpion/Monte had almost no ackermann which I believe makes the car hard to drive at large steering angles at slow speeds.....

Hi John, I think David does know this since I offered him X parts and he said he's looking for Ackerman-less components but it's good you posted this info because a lot of people don't know this, and I believe some people have heated and bent the sterering arm part of the hubs down to compensate. Also, a lot of people realize trhe S2 Monte uses different hubs and has 14" wheels, but most of them don't realize that although the S1 monte and Scorpion have the same wheels, they had different stock tire sizes (185's for the monte Vs 165's for the Scorpion).

I just learned something. I thought the 1300 X1/9 had the exact same uprights. Never noticed the steering geometry was slightly different. Here is a link to Matt in Ohio who parts out He sells bare or rebuilt uprights for the different X1/9's. http://www.marketworks.com/StoreFrontProfiles/deluxeSFshop.aspx?Carriers%20Uprights%20...&sfid=82804&c=437094 I have had great luck with his parts. He grades the used parts he has fairly and if you email him with your needs, he will create a package.

Thank you both . I checked Midwest X 1/9 this morning . They
have a set of 4 re-built carriers for $399 . They list them as for
a '74 - '78 X1/9 [4 spd] . Similiar listings for individual carriers
state they are the one with the smaller bearings [as J. Allen stated] .
That being for the fronts so they should fit . Rears who knows .
I have e-mailed them for an opinion as to fittment to a '76 Scorp .
If these things fit I won't have to monkey w/getting all the parts,
bearings, rings, etc. & pay to have them put in [parts] . Thanks .

Thanks, I try to spread the word around as much as I can!
the guys who heat and bend the arms are usually trying to correct bump-steer, not ackermann. The ackermann correction moves the arms closer to the centerline of the car while bump-steer correction moves them 'upwards' (going from memory here).
I still have some issues with bump steer, but its nothing I can't deal with (stiffer springs keep wheel movement to a minimum).
