As Forum consensus seems to lean in favor of jerking
a Scorp's A/C sytem I'm doing same. This example is
new to me BTW . I started @ the dryer & the muck that
flowed out, WOW ! Question is this: has anyone ever
driven a new one off the showroom floor & the A/C
performed adequately ? P.S.: there was ZERO Freon
in the system + the compressor was/is locked up .
Thanks . . .

Unless you are asking about the Scorp version in particular, the answer is yes. I bought my '81 coupe new and tho I don't use the AC often in the Northwest, it ran fine from the beginning. Still does. Yours may be another example of lousy italian follow through - having a good basic design but forgetting some critical detail in the execution.

The big difference is the big York piston compressor on the Scorpion really carries a performance penalty. Still, if you live in a hot area, a Scorpion can get pretty toasty inside for a "convertible" that lacks the wing-windows prevalent on cars of the era. Allegedly the Scorp AC (stock) does do a decent job when it's in good nick, but those are few and far between.
