Mirror adhesive for a Scorpion rear view mirror . I've heard it
takes some "special" type of glue for the metal plate to that black
square on the windshield . I also need to re-glue the mirror
proper to that white nylon plate that allows the mirror to move
but I don't want to have the glue eat thru the backside of the mirror .
Thanks . . .

David,
When I had my windshield installed last year, the installer (Mother's Autoglass) used the same black eurathane rubber that he glued the windshield in, to glue the rear view mirror on.
He masked off the little black patch on the windshield then pressed just the base of the mirror onto it...let it sit for a bit then removed the tape. Its very clean and strong.
I suppose any 3-M double sided tape would stick the mirror back on.

Thanks gents . I had some pool deck seam work to do so I used one
part urethane to glue the mirror on the white nylon, color irrelevant,
it's hidden . My prime concern was what nature of glue I need use
to stick the mirror plate back to the windshield . SOOOO many different
formulas of that stuff now: Ford/GM/Toyota, etc . goes on & on . I'll
try the Permatex . Rather thought that would work but what formula ?
Thanks again .

NO! NO! NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
DON'T GLUE THE MIRROR TO THE GLASS!!!!!

That's where ALL of the famous "Scorpion cracked windshields" start!!! The mirror glued to the inside of the two glass laminations is just asking for a cracked glass, I've even heard tales of them cracking WITHOUT TOUCHING the mirror. I snapped the mirror mount on one upside down, tried carefully to remove it, CRAAAACK!!!!

DO put a bracket up to the roof member above the window, add a glob of silicone to stabilize to the WS if you must, but PLEASE don't bond to the windscreen with ANY adhesive unless you are full well prepared to replace it.

OR, ignore this advice and one day we will see you post looking for a new WS, I would put money on it. Do yourself a favor and heed this. Please.

I used Loctite 480 on my Jeeps rear view mirror about three years ago and it hasn't budged since, it's been exposed to very hot and very cold temps with no trouble.

Yikes, glad I asked 1ST . Then why did the factory
glue it to the glass ? Will's suggestion would place
the mirror much higher though . What about something
flexible like Permatex Ultra Black hi-temp silicone
gasket maker on that painted black windshield square ?
I can see why something rigid like crazy glue might
present problems .

No, the morror doesn't have to be higher- you can make an arm/bracket that comes forward and down to the black spot so the mirror is secured to the roof member but stays in the stock location, you can try a mirror like a Zagto mirror (might work) that already has an arm of this type.- or you can use a different kind of mirror, like a Wink, etc.

Using a softer adhesive would work if you buy into the root cause of the problem being stress caused by the different expansion coefficients of the metal mirror mount and the glass, and this is one popular theory. Personally, I think while that may be a contributing factor, adjusting the mirror is a problem also given the fact that the glass laminations are so very thin.

This is a scorpion-specific problem that I don't know of existing in any other cars, but about HALF of the scorpions out there have cracked or replaced windscreens. This is why you'll see an ebay ad with "uncracked windshield" specifically listed. I'm not sure if this was ever addressed on the S2 monte, it might be worth a look to see how their mirrors are affixed?

actually having that mirror mounted on the window is dangerous
1) blocks some of your sight
2) if you hit it, you can crack the window as was mentioned by Will.

Nothing new here, just will fall in-behind the team and say, USE THE RIGHT GLUE!

Perhaps MonteHOspital has some if you have to glue

Don't use WINK mirror

I have tried and unless you are below 6'0 forget it, you won't be able to see behind you without eliminating much of your windshield.
Especially the area you use to see what color those strange lights are in the intersection RED YELLOW GREEN etc.... Smasholla

Beta may very well drill right above the window/ or get something aftermarket and Italian.

Goood Luck!

Go to a Porche dealer and get the adhesive pad (double stick foam) for a '63 -'67 911 mirror. It is exactly the same size as the Scorp mirror. No more windshield cracks.
