....about a month and a half ago or so I posted a question about long term auto storage in barns. Now my question is about the various nice "lumps" that tend to accumulate in the garage after the job is completed. I am curious to learn what some other Lancisti may suggest as best practices with regards to storing engines, transaxles and gearboxes ect for the long term (many years). For example should engines and gearboxes be stored full of oil or dry? What are the best ways to preserve the seals? Hand crank/turn over from time to time? Thanks in advance.

Drain & replenish all oil : engine, trans/gearbox to remove crud,
water, acid . Used to be special "storage" oils but 10 or 30 weight
should suffice & of course excersise things from time to time .
You'll drain them all anyway in the future for "proper" oils .
You know the "trick" of occassional plug removal, 10 weight in
the chambers, rotate crank, plugs back in: rings don't seize .
Seals like to be "wet" but none last indefinitely . Some folks leave
the oily/dirt film coating on exterior surfaces until the install for
protection or wrap them in an oil soaked towel, 10W again .

Squirting with Waxoyl not a bad idea either.
The best option is to keep parts in a nice dry, warm enviroment. Currently, I have a rebuilt gear box, crank and rods stored in my bedroom.
And I really can't think why my last girlfriend ditched me. ???
