This weekend we did the Alpine 500, a fast touring event here in Northern California.

It goes for two days over a ~630 mile route chosen for scenery and driving interest, mostly in the Sierras. There were sixty or so entrants, all in pre-1976 automobiles, which included a Rolls Royce Silver Dawn, an enormous Mercury Meteor S33, and an optimistic Fiat 500. Most of the entrants opted for sporting cars of the period (Alfas, Porsches, BMWs, Triumphs, MGs, and the like). My personal favorite was a Corvair Monza with a Holley carb, an aggressive cam profile, and very little in the way of a muffler. It sounded like Armaggedon.

I've had my Fulvia for about 1 1/2 years, and I still marvel at what a great all-rounder it is. I'd not previously had a chance to drive the car hard at altitude for long periods, and I was surprised at how well the Fulvia's 1.3 liters handled the climbs and the passing chores at 4000 ft +, provided I was willing to keep the revs up.

The Fulvia impressed others as well. A number of entrants who hadn't paid much attention to the car at the start came up at the first day's stop with questions and requests to see what was under the hood.
