At some time in the future I am going to have to deal with a leaky pan gasket in the 79 LBZ and want to replace the oil pump My questions are:

How different are the 1800 and 2L pumps?

Can any of the main body parts of the Fiat 2L pump be used as replacements?

Is there any source on new 2L pumps?

While on a rack is it possible to drop the pan to replace the gasket or does it require the engine to come out?

Anything else I should know about this?

TIA Jim

I'll see if I can answer some of your questions, though most of this is from memory....

The 1800 and 2000 pumps are different, the mounting bolt spacing and shaft relationship is different. This statement refers specifically to the FIAT 1800>2000 relationship. I believe the Beta 1800 is the same as a FIAT, BUT THE SCORPION 1800 is based on the 2000 designed block!

The FIAT 2000 pump is entirely differnent than the Beta 2000 one. The Beta has shorter gears, differnt body and pickup to fit the pan. The FIAT one is identical (with the exception of the pickup) to the Scorpion/MonteCarlo pump.

I believe the pan can be dropped without pulling the engine, though the halfshafts and/or the AC/power sterring/etc. may get in the way (not present on a Scorpion).

To see some of the differences between the pumps, look in the Guy Croft book. I seem to remeber some good photos of the different units there...

Jim: I replaced the pan on the 82 White Zagato with out pulling the engine, BUT......it was not easy, you basically end up removing the engines with out pulling it :( Be warned, it is a lot of trouble BUT there is a bright side....You have Carbs insted of FI and that was a big part of the difficulty, also the AC compressor wants to hang up so be prepared to loosen all the AC compressor stuff. I also had to do some Wedging with my big bent screw driver :) You can do it, just dont get in a hurry with it or it will BITE you.

The people that rebuilt my engine did start with the pan off of the car as part of the inspection.
Cross member was out and the engine was held up by a jack and extension wilst the car was elevated on a rack.

So it is do able and as indicated in previous with Allen- don't be in a hurry!

If that engine drops.... it may not hit the ground but it won't be a nice outcome I am fairly certain.

I'm mostly a Beta 2L / scorpion 1.8 guy, I don't remember the 124 2L pump base being different (maybe it is but I just don't remember, I'm not calling John a liar) but the 131 2L is DEFINITELY different- and not adaptable.

An option for worn involute gears: Standard gears may also be available new as replacements, I dunno.I had the extra long gears and found the following:

You can get the pump gears coated with teflon at your local metal finisher- local price is about $75. Put something in where the shaft goes so it'll fit back on the shaft, the teflon adds about 4-6mil onto the gears all 'round. It'll be noisy if you spin it in air and have more drag than stock, running it for about an hour on an electric drill will wear in the teflon, use a fan to keep it from overheating. Then go buy a new drill :)
