Greetings all,

I've always loved the looks and styling of the Lancia Scorpion/Monte and am actively looking for one to purchase. As with any car one searches for more power, and that is where my question lies. I believe the stock engine is a 1.8L 4 cylinder .. carb'd. Now I've read about 2.0L conversions, more compression, dual carbies, supercharger install, turbo install etc etc, all being good options. I presonally prefer the turbo as coming from a turbo 4 cylinder background can appreciate the power and civility that can be achieved. However, being in the USA sourcing Lancia engine parts from the local junkyards isn't too common, at least here in MD. Now, one could swap in say a Honda powerplant -- but the Italian feel is sadly gone. :( So, what about swapping in a larger displacement Italian engine?

Which leads me to my real question: Has anyone thought (I'm sure they have) of swapping in say a Alfa v6? Say something of the 2.5L or even the 3.0L flavor?

Physically, will the engine and transaxle fit?

Is the v6 + transaxle weight too great? Will it disrupt the Lancia's balance?

Is this a cooling nightmare?

Lastly, is this a crazy idea? I don't think so, I'm sure the sound of a 2.5L Alfa v6 at full tilt with 3 carbs or EFI with downdraft style throttles would have a heavenly sound in the back of that Lancia! Coupled with the power those engines make. And here in Maryland those engines/transaxles can be found, hooray! Thanks for reading this far.

Welcome to Lancisti!

The Alfa V6 conversion has been done by Paul Millet in the UK. You can find some pics here in Ken Haven's Gallery Album.

There has also been a thread on this recently at the Yahoo Scorpion forum. Bottom line is, it takes a lot of work and the ability to do some custom fabrication.

Personally, I'm still of a mind that the FIAT/Lancia twin-cam is a great little engine capable of some really impressive HP and torque levels without too much trouble. Obviously, as Will has pointed out in the past, forced induction is really the best and most direct path to increased torque and horsepower.

And on that note, please send me an offline email if you're really interested in a Scorpion. I have one available for a VERY reasonable price that is already turbocharged and is very solid because it has lived in Colorado it's entire life.
