View Full Version : fake fuel leak
okay, so when I started Livia up after a winter's sleep, there was fuel dripping out from somewhere near the right front wheel, this happened for a few minutes and then stopped and has not happened since. Every hose, and line was checked, and now I am wondering if it is the charcoal cannister- thoughts??
Thanks

It's likely a fuel leak in one of the pressurized F.I. hoses. The fuel rail disconnects are on the right side near the timing belt cover, check there for leaking or for that matter anywhere along the lines. They're under 30-40 lbs of pressure constantly, so a leak is entirely possible if the hoses are original. Does it take a while to start? You may have a leak that is releasing your line pressure when stopped.
I had original looking lines and a gas fume in that area, I replaced the hoses and it went away. I found the inside of the old hose to be cracked like the Atlantic sea floor, so it was no wonder it was leaking!
The charcoal canister is under the battery, driver's side. It shouldn't get liquid fuel into it.

Any fuel leak in the engine compartment should be taken with the UTMOST seriousness!!
Clamp off the return line with a pair of vise grips- this will raise fuel pressure to the maximum. then you may be able to spot the leak- it's quite possible that it only leaks under higher than normal pressure. If your car had been stored for a while, the FPR might have been a bit sticky and not pulled down pressure at first.
At any rate DO find the problem before you drive it!! you certainly don't want it hosing down the exhaust manifold!
Thanks Guys
thatis what concerns me, he has been driving it every day all week while working on it and tracing all the lines, but nothing so far
