Here's my second in a day!

Looking at the rod linkage for our Betas made me compare it to the 80's FWD Chrysler linkage (I used to be heavy into Shelby/Dodges). The rear rod connecting to the shifter on the Chryslers was a hollow 2-piece tube, with an adjustable tightening connection that allowed the rod to be shortened or lengthened to add/reduce play in the shifts. I got very good at this with my '86 GLH, and it was very effective.

Could something like this be useful for our cars? Perhaps shortening the original rod and placing a connection inbetween. How about it - sounds like a BetaBoyz project!

Which rod do you mean?

I replaced the short one with 2 ball joints with a piece of 6mm threaded rod and a couple of small ball joints. Better than the factory ones.

The long one going into the cockpit. You'd have to take the center console out to get to it, but that might be easier to do than having to crawl under the car...

I like your idea, tho. Has anyone thought of modifying the entire linkage setup to a cable shift, or is that even possible?

I would give my mod a try before doing anything else as it is a cheap, easy mod that targets the worst offender. The cost was $NZ40 (13GBP) 2 ball joints and a short piece of threaded rod plus 2 nuts to lock. No special tools required.

My one actually fell off in a mountain pass leaving me in 3rd gear all the way home until I could investigate.

The shift is pretty good now.

Targeting the smaller parts that only move a small amount has the greatest benefit because a small amount of wear is more noticeable than in a part that moves a greater distance.

A good simple rod shift is better as there is less friction than cable.
